Roasting with the Gene (CBR-101) home roaster
Roasting with the Gene home roaster works quite simply. The challenge (and therefore the fun) begins when you start to find the best roast profiles for the Gene roaster and to roast the coffee the way you love it. Below you will find two suggestions to start with. In addition, a selection of possible genes roasting profiles for different coffee beans.
Standard roast with Gene Café CBR-101
- Insert the empty glass bulb; press the blue on-off button, set a time of about 6 minutes and a temperature of 200 ° C. Let the roasting machine heat up until the temperature is around 200 ° C.
- Press the red button until an "E" appears in the display. Take the piston out, preferably with a cloth or oven mitt. Attention, it is extremely hot.
- Fill 200 to 250 grams of raw coffee into the container. In no case more than to the mark. Fix it nicely, set the lid to and with the blue button for 19 minutes, the red one to 240 ° C and start the roasting with the red button.
- The coffee is now loaded with heat and dried and then taken directly into the roasting process. You can see how the current and the end temperature flash alternately. You can adjust the temperature and time while roasting. At the first roasting, we would not intervene, but simply watch what happens.
- Sometimes it is difficult to hear the crackling in the Gene roaster. You notice, however, that the beans are significantly larger in a short time, many peel loosen and a distinct roasted smell is recognizable. And through the big glass you can observe the colour of the coffee.
- After the first crack you wait until you have reached the desired degree of roast.
- When the roast is ready, remove the flask with a pot glove, fill the beans in a colander and turn with a wooden trowel or similar to allow the coffee to cool.
Try how the coffee tastes at the same degree of roast when you raise the temperature to 250 ° C and roast it a bit shorter.
P.S. The Gene roaster has a built-in cooling function, but unfortunately that is not great and the coffee cools way too long, is baked and flat in taste. Take the coffee as described above after the roast really right out and cool him, for example; in a spaghetti strainer and with a fan.
