What is a coffee roaster?

A coffee roaster is a technical device used to dry green coffee with a moisture content of approx. 11% and to process it into roasted coffee that is ready to be enjoyed.

At the same time, coffee roaster is the job title of those who operate the roasting machine.

Do I need a coffee roaster to roast coffee?

Roasting is the dry heating of the coffee beans to about 200°C. This is also possible, for example, in a frying pan. For a good roasting result, however, the coffee must be roasted evenly inside and outside as well as on all sides. The coffee roasters are designed accordingly.

How does a coffee roaster work?

A coffee roaster has the following three functions:

  • Supply of heat
  • airflow
  • Movement of the beans during roasting

In coffee roasters, heat is generated by conduction (contact, e.g. with the roasting drum), convection (hot air flow) and radiation (radiation). Depending on how the roasting machine is constructed, the proportion varies between conduction, convection and radiation.

Is roasting coffee difficult?

Coffee roasting is not difficult. At the same time, the taste of coffee can vary greatly depending on how the coffee was roasted (brightness, temperature curve, air flow curve). The more one deals with roasting and the different green coffees, the more the roasted coffee corresponds to one's own taste.
