This organic-certified and fair trade Robusta (Canephora) comes from Karagwe in the northwest of Tanzania, near the border with Uganda and Rwanda. It is grown at an altitude of 1200-1800 meters above sea level under shade trees, handpicked, and processed by sun-drying (natural). The cooperative union Kaderes Peasants Development Plc was founded in 2008 by 34 members. At that time, producers sold their products at very low prices to local traders and middlemen. They have since grown into a Fairtrade organisation with nearly 4,000 members, of which 20% are women. Most members belong to the Wanyambo, Wahaya, and Wasubi tribes. But also Wakiga, Wanyarwanda, and Wahima, who had to flee from Rwanda and Uganda.

They depend on the cultivation and export of goods such as coffee, bananas, or beans, with coffee being the most important export product for them.

With the help of the Fairtrade premium, a primary school for 293 children was built, among other things. The cooperative also invests in the education of its members so that they are familiar with sustainable agricultural practices, as well as their individual financial rights and obligations.

In addition, the cooperative supports its members in improving the productivity and quality of their coffee and in achieving higher prices for their coffee. Among other things, it has built two agro-education centres and 14 wells for the community.

Preparation Recommendation

Robusta coffees are mainly used for espresso blends, they give the espresso body, reduce acidity, and also have more caffeine than Arabica beans.

This is a very high-quality Robusta. Therefore, we often drink it as a single-origin espresso.
