How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee?
The question "how much caffeine does coffee contain" cannot be answered with a single number. Serving size, bean type, and brewing method always interact with each other. As a rough guideline, a cup of filter coffee (200 ml) typically contains between 80 and 120 mg of caffeine. However, a large mug of 400 ml already doubles this amount.
What matters is that dosage, brew ratio, and contact time together determine what ends up in the cup. So if you want to know how much caffeine you are actually consuming per day, you should not only count which beverages you drink, but also consider how large the portions are.

The most persistent misconception about coffee and caffeine content is that many people assume an espresso automatically contains more caffeine than a filter coffee. Strictly speaking, this is only true per milliliter. Per cup, however, the picture looks very different.

Cappuccino and latte macchiato contain the same amount of caffeine as the espresso they are made with; the milk does not change that. In a direct comparison, a cup of filter coffee contains significantly more caffeine than an energy drink. The most important influencing factors at a glance
Not all factors are equally relevant. Below is an overview sorted by level of influence:
Coffee variety (Arabica vs. Robusta) ➔ High influence. This is the single most important factor. Depending on the variety, the caffeine content of the bean can be almost twice as high.
Brew ratio ➔ High influence. More coffee grounds per amount of water directly means more caffeine in the cup.
Brewing method ➔ Medium influence. Filter, espresso, French press, and cold brew extract different amounts of caffeine from the coffee grounds.
Roast level ➔ Low influence. Caffeine is heat-stable. The amount remains largely unchanged during roasting, regardless of whether the roast is light or dark.
Grind size ➔ Low influence. It affects extraction speed, not the maximum possible caffeine amount in the cup.
Arabica and Robusta in a caffeine comparison
The biggest difference in caffeine content does not come from the preparation, but from the bean. Arabica contains in general 1.0–1.5% caffeine. Robusta is with 2.0–2.7% significantly higher, about double. So if you want more caffeine in a targeted way, you have the biggest lever in your hands with the choice of beans.
Robusta is often used in espresso blends because it brings more body, a more stable crema and also more caffeine. Within the Arabica species, varieties such as Bourbon, Typica or Caturra also vary slightly in caffeine content, however significantly less strongly than the difference between Arabica and Robusta.
Why roast level has hardly any influence on caffeine content
One of the most widespread myths about coffee: Dark roasted coffee contains more caffeine because it tastes more intense and "strong." That is not true. Caffeine is a chemically stable compound and remains largely intact during roasting. The roast color is not a reliable indicator of caffeine content.
What actually changes during roasting is the taste: darker profiles develop more roasted aromas, less acidity, and a fuller body. This is often perceived as "stronger." With caffeine content, however, it has very little to do. If you want to pay attention to caffeine when buying beans, you first look at the variety and not at the roast profile.
